Law of Attraction and Affirmations

Do affirmations work?

Like most things they take practice and effort, what works for one may not work for another. We are all wired differently.

Let’s take a look at probably one of the most famous affirmations of all:

“Everyday in every way I am getting better and better”

If you use this affirmation and it works fine then that’s all well and good. For me though it falls a bit short, and I suspect if you are having problems with your affirmations, using ones like this could be why – let me explain:

“Everyday in every way I am getting better and better”

Better and better at what? Gaining weight, getting poorer, bad relationships.

The words, “better and better” also imply that you need to improve. The gatekeeper that is your conscious mind, could pull this phrase to pieces, and if you are not careful you could end up feeling worse.

Them damn rules:

It can be quite hard to come up with affirmations that are inspiring, and by adding some rules , this can make it more so, but we want to do it right don’t we?
So here are 9 rules that, if followed, might help you make some awe-inspiring affirmations:

1. Inspirational:

Affirmations have to be believable to yourself, and worded explicitly by yourself, for example: if you are feeling sad for whatever reason, merely saying to yourself, “I now feel happy” will not work. The key word in all thing law of attraction is emotion and it is here that most people probably fail.

So, if you are creating affirmations, then the key rule for me is make them inspiring and thought provoking, create time and space for yourself to really come up with ones that hit the spot – made by you!

2. Believable:

It has to be believable. If you don’t own a penny and you live in poverty, then saying to yourself, “I am now rich” will not get past the gatekeeper that is you conscious mind. It will just laugh and say, “Really, and how are you going to do this.”

3. In the present:

Common sense really, if your affirmation is, “One day I am going to be rich” then that day will always be somewhere in the future and will probably never come

4. Emotion:

As mentioned before and worth mentioning again – it has to rock, and really be inspirational, think of how you feel after one of your favourite inspirational quotes, you are really looking to stir those emotions.

5. Negatives:

Try and keep away from negatives – I recently had a conversation with a person who told me their favourite quote was “what ever happens, I can handle it.” It worked for that person, but as far as I am concerned it is not one you should start your day with. To me it reeks of inviting doom.

The affirmation itself is not a bad one and it worked for that person in certain situations, and there is no harm in using negatives in affirmations, so long as they are followed by a positive. I would still think twice about using the above affirmation, negatives can be rephrased in a more positive way, and I will show you how in some examples further on.

6. Questions:

When you make a blanket affirmation, that is not phrased as a question, the gatekeeper of your conscious mind will analyse and criticise, like it always does, it does it for a reason though, and that reason is to protect you from possible dangers.

By wording your affirmation as a question, you have a better chance of the gatekeeper letting it through the conscious mind, and straight into your subconscious, where it will start to look for answers to your questions.

7. Passion:

Put some passion into your affirmations and not just when you are writing them, but also when you say them. When you wake up in the morning you have an amazing amount of fire in your belly, and saying a phrase like, “I want to be calm and in control,” is a bit passive. Remember when you are writing these phrases you want to provoke all of your emotions – let’s not suppress anything.

You don’t want to go through life being in a totally passive and repressed state. Let’s not get all ‘Californian woo woo’ here, life does not always run smoothly. You may get out of bed in the morning feeling great, but there will be things that don’t always go to plan throughout your day. Let us choose and create affirmations that can inspire us at these times.

8. Gratitude:

Is the very essence of Law of Attraction, it should be used in every ingredient in your life and this includes affirmations.

9. Third person:

Quite often we talk to ourselves in the 3rd person, and also look to outside influences or people for confirmation and approval, so why not add a bit of 3rd person into your affirmations.

What do the following affirmations provoke in you?

Why am I a winner, what makes me succeed, why do I never quit until I have achieved my desired outcome, how does it feel to have such amazing inner strength and knowing, I am so grateful and thankful for who I am and the positive force of (your name) in my life, The power, strength and love within me is enormous and it manifests here and now. I thank you lord

Why am I so calm and vibrant, what is it within me that makes me such and a magnet for attracting positive energy, how does it feel to have such warmth and exuberance pulsating through me at all times, I am thankful and grateful for the glory and truth that emanates from me in the here and now, (your name) exudes charm, warmth and charisma which attracts wonderful things, people and lovers. I thank you Lord

Negatives in Affirmations:

Earlier we touched on negatives in affirmations. There is nothing wrong with having a negative in an an affirmation, so long as it is followed by a positive. Even negatives though can be worded and phrased differently. My friends affirmation was, “whatever happens, I can handle it,” could be rephrased, maybe, like the example below:

How is it that I deal with all of life’s enigmas with consummate ease, what is it within me that has the ability to rise above and overcome any challenge with such daring and endurance, why do I have such a genius mind that is combined with a ferocious ‘can do’ attitude, (your name) deals with all of lifes challenges with a determination and strength that beggars belief, I am thankful and grateful for my ‘never say never’ attitude and the enormous inner strength that burns within me right here and now. I thank you Lord.

Not just Affirmations:

Worth saying here that you cannot become what you want to be, by just chanting words, you also have to take action, and therefore your chants have to inspire and motivate you – to do just that. I concentrate mainly on personality traits and raising the emotions, when doing affirmations. This is because whether we believe it or not, we have everything we need within us, and it’s those traits and emotions that will drag you right to where you need to be.

For example, it is much easier to believe that you can promote a ‘can do’ attitude within yourself, than it is to believe you can gain immediate wealth from a place of poverty. It is the power and personality within you, that will bring about the changes you desire – so concentrate on these.

Once more with emotion:

So, my advice here is clear, concentrate on the inner you and aim to hit your emotions, and not the physical you, for example:

Bad affirmation: “I am now beautiful and thin” – is boring, emotionless, does not inspire action and if you are not thin, then your gatekeeper will just pull this affirmation to shreds

Good affirmation: what is it that makes me such a vibrant and beautiful energy within the universe, how does it feel to have so much love and compassion for everybody I meet, (your name) has a beautiful soul which attracts beautiful, like minded, people, why do I love and honour my body, and how is it that when I feel so beautiful on the inside, as I do now – it emanates to my outer appearance.

Passion and Joy:

Try to bring Passion and joy to you affirmations, those 2 words are right at the top of the emotional scale and these are the emotions you are aiming for.

You should write your affirmations down on a piece of card. Never, never, never try committing them to memory: your mind can get lazy and if you are feeling low, the last thing your mind will be motivated to do is try and remember an affirmation, also the act of memorising them takes the passion out of it, this is because when you are trying to repeat them back to yourself, you are concentrating mainly on remembering the words rather than what they mean. Bit like someone who is counting to the beat when they are dancing, rather than feeling the emotion of the dance – it has to come from the heart.

How often should I do my Affirmations?

When getting out of bed in the morning, twice more during the morning, dinner time, twice more in the afternoon and before bed time – as often as you can do them.

At the bottom of each affirmation card I want you to write, in big capital letters, the word ‘GRATITUDE’. When you have finished chanting your affirmations, I want you to go back to whatever you were doing before, and concentrate on all the things you are grateful for. You should already be feeling on a high after your affirmations, that is, if you have done the exercise correctly. What we want you to do now is keep those emotions up and running, and there is no better way of doing this than with feelings of gratitude.

Inspirational Quotes:

As well as carrying your daily affirmations around with you on a piece of card, why not also write down your favourite quotes, and get into the habit of reading both your affirmations and favourite quotes at the same time. Combining the 2 can have a real positive effect on your emotions. I will leave some quotes on the bottom of this article to help you get started.

All things Law of Attraction:

Why not get practicing all thing law of attraction too, and enrol in some classes and courses. Combined with your affirmations you can start becoming an unstoppable force.

Click on one of the banners down the side of this web page and you will be taken to the 11 forgotten laws course – featuring Bob Proctor(from ‘The secret’) and Mary Morrissey. You can download the whole course and play it on your MP3 player . I play it just about everywhere: the gym, shopping, cleaning etc.

It is an excellent way to get a helping hand and kick-start with all things law of attraction.

We all take information in differently, so really try and immerse yourself in as much material as you possibly can, by as many different authors as you can.

I will leave you with some inspirational quotes that you might want to use, along with your affirmations:

Quotes:
I have learned that if one advances confidently in the direction of his dreams, and endeavours to live the life he has imagined, he will meet with a success unexpected in common hours.
–Henry David Thoreau

Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light not our darkness that frightens us. Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small doesn’t serve the world. There’s nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us.
- Nelson Mandela

Far better is it to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though checkered by failure…than to rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy much nor suffer much, because they live in a gray twilight that knows not victory nor defeat.
- Theodore Roosevelt

Thou shalt not be a victim. Thou shalt not be a perpetrator. Above all, thou shalt not be a bystander
There is no beauty but the beauty of action.

You do not get paid for the service of praise and gratitude, not because they’re worthless, but because they’re priceless.

If you don’t like something, change it; if you can’t change it, change the way you think about it.
- Mary Engelbreit

Either you run the day or the day runs you.
- Jim Rohn

The time is always right to do what is right.
- Martin Luther King Jr

Man is not made for defeat. A man can be destroyed, but not defeated.
- Ernest Hemingway

There is no luck except where there is discipline.
- Irish Proverb

It is not because things are difficult that we do not dare, it is because we do not dare that they are difficult.
- Seneca

What counts is not necessarily the size of the dog in the fight – it’s the size of the fight in the dog.
- Dwight D. Eisenhower

You are never given a wish without also being given the power to make it true. You may have to work for it, however.
- Richard Bach

Only those who do nothing at all make no mistakes… but that would be a mistake.
Too often we underestimate the power of a touch, a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, an honest compliment, or the smallest act of caring, all of which have the potential to turn a life around.
- Leo Buscaglia
